Erica DeMarch, PT conducts a follow-up interview with us for another podcast episode

Every six minutes, someone will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the United States.

Erica DeMarch, a physical therapist specializing in neuro, vestibular, and balance rehabilitation, asked the same two questions to the six Parkinson’s experts she interviewed in April for her website www.stepandconnect.com.

The 6th and final podcast episode of this series is: Ask the Parkinson’s Expert - Take 6 for PD. The participants are Melissa McConaghy, Josepha Domingos, John Dean, Dr. Eric Rhoden, Dr. Becky Farley, Betsy Vierck, and Catherine Ross.

SUMMARY

Tips to decrease the progression of Parkinson’s disease.

  • Read research articles and textbooks.

  • Build awareness of posture

  • Be informed of what can happen to your body and work against these symptoms.

  • Exercise is our new medicine.

  • Exercising with others who have Parkinson’s builds a support network of friends.

  • Exercise should be goal oriented. An example of a possible goal is to increase stamina for an upcoming vacation trip.

What new research are we following?

  • We are frustrated with the slow research process and slow FDA approval time, especially when a medication is in use in Europe, but not approved in the US.

  • Subcutaneous continuous delivery of dopamine or an agonist. This is approved in Europe, but not the US.

  • Exenatide is a medication approved for diabetes. It appears to stop the progression of Parkinson’s. The second clinical trial in the US has just been completed. The third clinical trial has begun in the UK. We continue to wait for results from the US trials.
